Gateway

Game Server Gateway (GSG)

The World Is Your Lobby.

Let’s Network the World.

Gateway is a self-hosted multiplayer platform that gives Unity developers the infrastructure needed to build online games faster. Add accounts, login, lobbies, room creation, server discovery, and dedicated server management without giving up ownership of your backend.

Run it yourself for free or let Run Level Systems host and manage it for you. Gateway works alongside Mirror, FishNet, Netcode, or your own networking solution.

BUILD MULTIPLAYER. OWN THE NETWORK.

How Gateway Fits Into Your Game

Gateway provides the multiplayer infrastructure layer around your game. It handles accounts, login, lobbies, room creation, server registration, and server discovery while allowing developers to continue using Mirror, FishNet, Netcode, or another networking framework for gameplay.

Gateway gives Unity developers ownership of their multiplayer infrastructure while providing an optional path to managed hosting and Dev+1 development assistance.

Why Gateway?

Own Your Infrastructure

Run Gateway on your own VPS, cloud provider, lab server, or dedicated machine.

No Vendor Lock-In

Your players, your database, your servers.

Free To Self Host

Run Gateway yourself with SQLite or MySQL/MariaDB.

Networking Framework Neutral

Use Mirror, FishNet, Netcode, or your own networking solution.

Multiplayer Ready Faster

Focus on your game instead of building account systems, lobbies, and matchmaking infrastructure.

Optional Managed Hosting

Run Level Systems can host and manage Gateway for you.

Gateway is not a networking library.

Gateway handles the multiplayer infrastructure around the game. The networking framework handles gameplay, player movement, RPCs, and the live session transport.

Gateway vs Cloud-Only Multiplayer Services

Many developers use cloud services because they simplify multiplayer development. Gateway takes a different approach. Instead of locking developers into a single cloud provider, Gateway allows complete ownership while still providing the convenience of managed hosting when desired.

Category Cloud Service Gateway
Ownership Vendor controlled Developer owned
Cost Model Monthly usage costs Free to self-host
Backend Control Backend ownership limited Complete ownership
Deployment Usually cloud-first Self-hosted first
Dependency Developer dependent on provider No vendor lock-in

How Gateway Works

1. Import Gateway SDK

Developers bring Gateway into the project and connect it to the existing multiplayer stack.

2. Configure Game ID and API Endpoint

Set the game identity and backend endpoint for the lobby and server directory.

3. Player Logs In

Accounts and login are handled before the player enters the live match layer.

4. Player Creates or Joins a Lobby

Gateway manages room creation and lobby browser behavior.

5. Gateway Allocates or Discovers a Server

Dedicated server selection, registration, and discovery happen through the Gateway layer.

6. Game Connects Through the Multiplayer Adapter

The game keeps using Mirror, FishNet, Netcode, or another transport adapter for gameplay.

7. Players Connect and Play

The live session remains inside the game networking framework.

8. Gateway Tracks Status

Server heartbeats and session state keep the lobby directory current.

Own The Whole Stack

Gateway can operate in multiple modes depending on the project and deployment target.

SQLite Self Hosted

Perfect for development and smaller projects.

MySQL/MariaDB Self Hosted

Recommended for production deployments.
